The Power of Plodding: Why Slow Progress Wins

When asked at work "how are you going?" I will typically respond with the following "just plodding along". Most people misinterpret this phrase as a throwaway line or think I’m just getting by. But they misunderstand the true power of plodding.

It is a marathon, not a sprint:

When you think about the length of your life, you realise that without pacing yourself, burnout is inevitable. Life is a marathon, not a sprint.

Plodding isn’t glamorous, but it’s often the most effective way to get big things done.

Plodding isn’t showy and doesn’t shout, ‘look at me'. Plodding is chipping away in the background getting consistent results over long periods of time.

The army have a saying "slow is smooth, smooth is fast".

How to Start Plodding:

Plodding does not come natural to everyone, especially in this chaotic world where busyness is a symbol of importance. Here a few simple steps to start plodding:

1. Focus on the Essential Few

In the words of Essentialism: “less but better.” Instead of scattering your energy across multiple small tasks, identify the few things that truly matter — the ones that will actually have the biggest impact. Give these your best effort and discard the rest.

2. Work at Your Natural Pace

Plodding means finding a rhythm that works for you. When you’re not rushing, you make fewer mistakes, think more clearly, and have the space to review your work. The result? Higher quality and less stress, because you’re giving each task the time and energy it deserves.

3. Build Margin into Your Tasks

By building margin into your tasks you are allowing for flexibility for the unexpected. Margin allows for you to maintain a sustainable pace over the long term.

Benefits of plodding:

1. Consistency beats intensity

Consistent and steady steps accumulate into massive progress over time. This is the compounding effect, the gains may not be noticeable daily, but overtime they become significant.

Example: writing 300 words a day leads to a book in a year.

2. Sustainable energy

Plodding avoids burnout. Plodding is about energy management - when you work at a sustainable pace you overcome the "sprint–crash cycles".

3. Deeper quality

As mentioned under "work at your natural pace" sections, steady work allows for time to reflect, refine, detect mistakes and create deeper quality

Plodding prioritizes depth over speed.

4. Peace of mind

Plodding gives you permission to slow down.

Plodding allows you to break the cycle of short term progress for long term burnout.

Living in constant rush and stress burdens the mind and soul.

Conclusion:

It’s about sustainable progress over time rather than immediate output at any cost.

Please don't misinterpreted this blog as saying that I have overcome a life of busyness, I still fall into the trap like anyone else and have to remind myself the power of plodding.

Remember, burnout is not a badge is honour. Are you wearing this useless badge now
